Den kulturelle skolesekken har vært en del av regjeringens kulturpolitiske satsing for grunnskolen siden 2001, og etter hvert ble også videregående skole innlemmet i ordningen. Dette betyr at i dag får alle elever, fra 1. klasse i grunnskolen til 3. trinn på videregående skole, oppleve profesjonell kunst og kultur gjennom DKS.
