OVF tar vare på og utvikler verdiene i fondet, og bidrar til utvikling av lokalsamfunn.
Fondet består av den delen som er att av "Geistligheden beneficerede
gods" og seinare tileigna eller tillagde eiendommar og kapital. Fondet
reguleres av Lov om Opplysningsvesenets fond av 7. juni 1996 nr. 33.
Loven skal sikre at fondet kjem Den norske kyrkja til gode og at
verdiane blir bevarte og gir avkastning i samsvar med Grunnlova § 106.
Eiendomsbesittelser (presteboliger, jordbruk, festetomter,
eiendomsutvikling), skogbruk og finansplasseringer (aksjer,
obligasjoner og utlån).
