Viken består av 51 kommuner fra de tidligere fylkeskommunene Østfold, Akershus og Buskerud samt Jevnaker og Lunner kommuner som tilhørte Oppland Fylkeskommune. Det vil bo 1,2 millioner innbyggere i Viken, dvs. nesten en fjerdedel av Norges befolkning, og fylket vil utgjøre 24 595 km2 i samlet areal.
