Stiftinga Hardingtonar vart skipa ut frå eit ynskje om å auka kjennskapen til komponisten og hardingen Geirr Tveitt sin store og allsidige produksjon, i tillegg til å fokusera folkemusikk og anna kulturskaping i Hardanger. Sidan starten i 1991 har festivalen vore ein årviss musikkfest i Norheimsund.
