Region Sunnhordland er eigd av kommunane i Sunnhordland: Austevoll, Bømlo, Etne, Fitjar, Kvinnherad, Stord, Sveio og Tysnes.

Sunnhordlandsrådet IPR er regionråd for eigarkommunane. Rådet skal: Vera ein felles arena for drøfting av regionale oppgåver regionen skal ha fokus på. Ivareta oppgåver knytt til regional utvikling når det gjeld samhandling mellom kommunane og iverksetjing av felles tiltak. Innstille på felles løysingar til kommunestyra ved behov for samordna løysingar i regionen. Ha fokus på næringsliv, samferdsel, infrastruktur og andre regionale oppgåver som er naturleg å arbeida samla med.
